The Partnership has three projects through which our community-based assault on the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs stems. These projects are successful because they are culturally and/or locally based on community building and coalition building. Their goals are to develop awareness and action in the communities to develop a community-based prevention system that will empower communities to eliminate alcohol and other drug problems. They are located in our high-risk communities.
- The Institute for African American Mobilization (IAAM) works within the African-American communities of Philadelphia.
- The Latino Partnership Initiative (LPI) is developing relationships across the diverse Latino communities
of Philadelphia.
- United Northeast Neighbors (UNN) brings together community groups of a mostly European-American working poor and working class neighborhood.
Leaders of all three projects work together as representatives to the Partnership Advisory Council which meets quarterly. This November the Advisory Council will hold a conference; bringing together the three projects to collaborate, compare and integrate their work. Main goals of this conference are to increase cultural understanding between the groups and. to share information on what has been
successful within their respective communities.
Aside from the shared goal to reduce drug use and drug-related violence. these projects have several commonalities. They are focused on lowering youth risk; opening up channels of communication between the people. organizations and government institutions; bridging gender and generation gaps within their communities; making information accessible to everyone.
